This is a slice of colorful petrified wood from the Triassic age Chinle Formation, collected near Winslow, Arizona. The slice is a cross-section of the fossil tree Araucarioxylon arizonicum, and is approximately 225 million years old. Permineralization with iron-rich jasper gives this petrified wood its rich red coloration. The slice measures approximately 8.5 x 7.25 inches x 5/8 inch thick. The front side (pictured) is an actual polished surface. The reverse side is reinforced with a fiberglass mesh and epoxy resin.
